Looking After Pets
Best Free Advice For Looking After Your Pets-
July 4th, 2010Pets AdviceGolden Retrievers are one of the most popular choices for a family pet and there’s a good reason for that. Children like golden retrievers because of their friendliness and playfulness. Golden retriever training is worth your time and effort because these dogs want to please and are intelligent enough to learn. That doesn’t mean that golden retriever training is easy, however, and it can take a lot of time and be a test of patience for both owner and pet I am going to give you some suggestions here for training your young golden retriever so he will grow into a well-behaved dog that will be a source of pride and joy to the whole family.
Housebreaking your pet
The first lesson in your golden retriever training course will be getting your puppy to relieve himself in the proper places. Most dog owners want to train their dog to do their business outside, and you can train your dog to do this with the use of a crate. A crate can be both a sheltered, snug bed for your pet and an aid in training him to control his bodily functions. Because most dogs won’t use the restroom in the same area they sleep, using the crate for small sections of time will let your dog learn to wait to go until he has been taken out. Reinforce the Golden retriever training by giving your puppy abundant praise once he’s gone to the bathroom where he is supposed to do so.
Chewing and Nipping Problems
Just because a dog explores its world by using its mouth, doesn’t mean it is okay for the animal to do so when interacting with its owners. A second important lesson in your golden retriever training that your pet needs to learn is that it is not okay for him to lick or mouth or nip at anyone during play or at any other time. Golden Retrievers especially like to chew, and they don’t care if its their favorite tennis ball or your favorite pair of loafers. This tendency to chew is only worsened when dogs are left alone for long periods of time or aren’t paid attention by their owners. A good preventative measure is to buy chewable toys for your puppy. You must also make sure the dog knows your shoes and furniture are off limits for chewing.
It’s time-consuming and a real test of patience to successfully complete your golden retriever training, but it is possible and will be rewarding as your dog develops into a model of good behavior. High energy levels and short attention spans may plague your training sessions, even though Golden retrievers are smart and want to please you. The best recourse is to use short training sessions filled with praise and rewards. A happy pet and a very happy family for years to come will be the end result.
