I’m so embarrassed. I’m in the park with my Jack Russell and he’s humping another dog. I think to myself, “How do I stop my dog from humping other dogs?” My observation of other dog owners in the park reveals that they too are totally embarrassed by their dog’s humping behavior. They sheepishly apologize, yet have no clue as to how to stop dog mounting. It’s possible to stop dogs from humping, but you first need to understand why dogs hump. I’ll show you how to get your dog to stop his embarrssing behavior.
Your Dog Is Not Gay
When I saw my dog, Jack, mount another male dog, I thought that meant he was a “gay” dog. Likewise, when I saw female dogs mounting other female dogs, I thought that they were lesbian dogs. Then I saw something so weird, it blew my mind: my male dog was humping the face of another male dog! I thought I’d die of embarrassment. When I expressed my concern about my dog’s sexual preference to another dog run attendee, this person explained to me that my dog was just doing what dogs do – in other words, my dog was not gay or even looking for sexual pleasure by humping another dog. Then why the heck was he humping him?
Dogs Need To Be The Alpha
There is a pecking order amongst dogs. In order to establish dominance, dogs will attempt to hump other dogs. By getting on top of another dog, the dog who is doing the mounting is letting the “mountee” know that he is the Alpha dog. Sometimes when dogs hump other dogs, they leave secretion. This secretion allows other dogs to know that the dog on who was secreted is submissive.
Is It Possible To Eliminate Humping Permanently?
Since humping is one of several ways in which dogs establish leadership in the pack, and since a pecking order is natural and necessary in a pack, why would you want to stop dog humping? I mean, isn’t it necessary for the survival of the pack to know who is in charge and in what order? Yes, it’s necessary for the survival of dogs to establish a pecking order. But when your dog tries to hump everyone (including you, your guests, and your neighbors) and everything (your couch, your handbag, etc.) it’s a sign of dominance/aggression and you must stop dog humping.

Neutering or spaying is the first and most important step to curbing a dog’s aggression. There are some good reasons for spaying your dog. One reason is that neutered/spayed dogs display less aggression because their hormone levels have dropped significantly once they’ve been altered. My experience is that dogs tend to calm down tremendously after having been spayed or neutered. Another reason you should neuter your dog is to lessen the chance of unwanted puppies. The ASPCA rescues thousands of unwanted, abandoned dogs each year simply due to overpopulation.

Certain breeds have a propensity for domination. What this means is that canines will do anything aggressive in order to establish their alpha position.
