Looking After Pets
Best Free Advice For Looking After Your Pets-
September 16th, 2011Pets AdviceBeagle temperament is midway between a Golden Retriever and a Terrier. How to train my dog, They’re not so eager to please as a Golden, but not so willful as most Terriers. That makes them a challenge to train, but not a major headache.
One way to get started on the right road is, as with all dogs, to start young. But keep in mind that Beagle pups are natural hunters.
They will want to roam and will find a dozen things to distract them every minute. To keep that to a minimum, arm yourself with something more interesting than anything in the environment.
That something could be a favorite ball, a size-appropriate chew bone, or some fascinating treats that smell really enticing. Don’t feed treat after treat to get them to obey, however. Treats are often high in calories and not intended as a meal. Also, you want to encourage them to listen because you are the alpha, not because they will be fed every time they obey.
Preparing the backyard or other training area to be free of more interesting items can be a challenge. If your home doesn’t provide that already, you might try starting in a spare room or the garage. Ensure there are no small items the dog can latch onto the moment you look away.
Have reasonable expectations for training, though. Beagles are hunters and they will sniff and wander whenever possible. Frustration is inevitable if you expect every Beagle to be like a show dog who focuses on you or what you want every minute.
One good way to minimize that frustration is to start the session by allowing them to explore freely for at least a few minutes. Once the area becomes familiar, the dog is more likely to focus on you. How to train dogs, Beagles are by nature very friendly and will enjoy interacting with you once nothing more interesting is nearby.
Another method for readying your Beagle for a training session is to start with lots of exercise that isn’t a rigid part of the training. Beagles are hunters, but – unlike Retrievers – don’t instinctively want to fetch and return.
Let them chase the ball until they’ve worked off some of that pent up energy from being in the house, crate, or kennel. Be sure to have several balls, though. Since they won’t retrieve, you’ll want a means of attracting their attention and, as hunters, they will seek to move onto the next ‘prey’ once the first one is ’subdued’.
Now, after some free wandering and a bit of exercise, your Beagle will be in a better frame of mind to begin the concentrated portion of the training session. These should be done regularly, every day around the same time if possible. Beagles, like most dogs, are creatures of habit. Once a routine is established they seek to follow it.
Making the effort to prepare the time and environment for training requires commitment. How to train dog, But it will be more than amply rewarded with a happier, less restless, and more compliant Beagle. Like him, have fun!

September 5th, 2011Pets AdviceA dog that bites is more than annoying; it is dangerous. Not only do you risk injury to yourself and your family, but if your dog bites someone, there is a chance you may have to put them down. How to train dogs, Even if your dog doesn’t bite, it’s important to be able to recognize the pre-cursers to this behavior so you can stop it from occurring in the first place. Starting obedience training from an early age can stop these habits developing.
Why Does Your Dog Bite?
Dogs always bite for a reason. Before you seek to remedy this behavior, you should take some time to understand the cause behind it. Understanding your dog’s behavior and motivations are your best tool in obedience training.
Some dogs are simply aggressive in nature but can be calmed down with proper training. Some have bad experiences, for instance being attacked by another dog which causes them to attack others as a form of offence. Other dogs have been taught to act this way. They may have been mistreated or abused in the past, or simply had owners who did not invest their time in training properly.
Fix It Before It Becomes A Problem
Some trainers believe that dogs that bite where taken away from the litter too soon. When dogs are with their mother and litter mates, they learn through play when biting is appropriate and how gentle or rough they can be. It’s a good idea with puppies to provide them with plenty of chew toys. It’s a natural instinct for dogs to chew when they are young. Providing toys that a puppy can recognize as their own will make it less likely that they chew up your furniture or other possessions.
People sometimes describe puppies as ‘mouthy’, they lick and nip people on the fingers and toes. While these actions can seem cute and affectionate, they are the early signs of biting which can lead to aggressive behavior later on. How to train dog, A puppy that licks your toes every morning is cute, but much less so when they are a fifty kilo hound with sharp teeth.
The best way to stop your dog from developing bad habits is to cut them at the bud. When your puppy licks or nips at you, reprimand them with a firmly spoken NO. Use a low tone. If there are particular times of the day when your dog nips of licks you, reward them when they don’t. For instance, if your puppy licks your hands when you pickup something from the ground, give them a pat and tell them they are a good dog when they don’t do it. Positive reinforcement is important.
If you haven’t already, enroll your dog in an obedience class. Even a short course over a few weeks will make a huge difference to the behavior of your dog as well as your skills as a handler and trainer. Don’t worry if your dog is already an adult, it turns out that you can teach an old dog new tricks. If it’s possible, all of your family should attend these classes. Every member of the household should discipline and train the dog with the same methods, as consistency is important.
Teaching Adult Dogs Not To Bite
You can apply the same principles when training an adult dog. Many dogs will bite or nip you during play. Often dogs don’t understand that they are hurting you. Next time you are at a park watch how dogs play together. When one dog becomes too rough the other dog will yelp and withdraw for a minute before they resume playing. Repeat this scenario with your dog. If play becomes too rough, stop completely. Tell them NO, in a stern voice and completely stop your interaction for a minute or so, then resume. If they bite again, repeat this. After a while they will begin to learn what kinds of play are appropriate and when they are being too rough.
(Make sure you never physically hurt your dog, this just establishes a sense of fear in them which will only enhance their aggression)
If telling your dog NO, or ignoring them doesn’t work, you can try holding their snout shut. After they have bitten or nips, gently hold their mouth shut for a few seconds. This takes away any sense of control a dog has over the situation, reminding them of who is the boss. This is a very uncomfortable feeling for a dog which they will want to avoid. After a few times this should stop them from biting. Be gentle with this method, being careful not to damage your dogs mouth or nose.
If your dog growls or shows other signs before they bite, you can stop them before they do with this firm NO. They will learn quickly that you are not happy with their behavior and hopefully stop.
You can try aversion therapy to stop your dogs from biting, however the previous methods described are more effective. Aversion therapy involves having a glove coated with bitter apple or a similar substance. When your dog bites your hand it will taste the bitter apple, which will discourage him or her from wanting to bite again.
Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise; daily walks or jogs are a great idea. This lets out a lot of energy which makes dogs calmer. When you are not at home, make sure your dog have plenty to do. Give them new toys every month or two, and a good sized bone that will take them a while to chew.
Re-educating Aggressive Dogs
Of course, not all bad behavior can be remedied with a simple verbal reprimand. If your dog’s aggression problems are worse that the scenarios described above you will need to take serious action. A dog attacking a stranger when provoked is not good, but if a dog is violent towards your friends, family or even yourself you may need to call in an expert.
When you are out of the house a muzzle may be required. This will stop your dog form biting anyone else outside of the home. Some dogs would never dream of biting their family but feel threatened by other humans or dogs and only bite in these situations. How to train dog. If this applies to your dog, you may like to contact an obedience specialist about socialization.

August 15th, 2011Pets AdviceIn order to deal with the problem of fear-biting, you must first accept the fact that although a dog’s behavior can usually be altered for the better, sometimes there are instances when, no matter what you do, your dog will be afraid of a certain object, person, or situation for as long as he lives. How to train dogs, Unfortunately, it is impossible to compel a puppy or dog to get over his phobia. Patience, perseverance, and consistency are all necessary for proper treatment of fear-biting. If you are too tough on you dog (screaming and yelling, showing anger/frustration etc), you will only end up exacerbating the problem, as your dog’s level of anxiety will heighten. So, a scared dog is incapable of being taught not to bite; he’s reacting out of instinct (to protect himself from what he views as danger) and panic. Even the best, most modern training that exists today will not stop a puppy or dog from biting when it is in a state of panic, as instinct and panic are powerful motivators that cannot be counteracted.
Although you cannot Directly stop fear biting through dog training, there are things that you can do in order to prevent, or drastically reduce the likelihood, that it will occur. How to train dog, The first thing you can do is to increase your dog’s level of confidence. A boost in confidence will ultimately decrease your dog’s level of anxiety. Next, you need to be observant and find out exactly what is causing him to feel afraid. Once you are able to pinpoint the root of his phobia, you must then try to make him comfortable in the presence of fearful object or situation.
Quick Tip: If your puppy bites when he is in a state of heightened anxiety, then it is extremely important for you to nip this behavior problem in the bud before it gets out of hand. How to train dog, Although this problem is Not Directly treatable through obedience training techniques, you can use indirect methods to prevent/stop your scared puppies from turning into fear-biters.

August 9th, 2011Pets AdviceHow To Train A Dog To Have an “Easy Going” Personality
I have quite a bit of experience in helping dog owners change their dog’s personalities, How to train dog, because I recently conducted an 8 week training course to help ADULT dogs change their personalities from mildly temperamental, reactive and aggressive, to easy going, with GREAT results!
The entire program is based on exercises that reprogram the Emotional part of a dog’s brain, and change the way he FEELS in certain situations. So instead of feeling nervous, he feels confident. Instead of feeling aggressive, we force him to feel playful.
But the real reason I bring this up, is because one of the BIG insights I had after holding that program was how much easier it would have been for my clients to simply prevent their dog’s from ever developing these temperamental personalities, vs. trying to fix them once they started to rear their ugly little heads.
If I could have gotten a hold of these dogs while they were still puppies, protected them from punishment based dog training programs, and instead ran them through a positive training program that focuses on getting the dog to obey because he WANT’S to, instead of because he’s AFRAID not to, I could have prevented lots of problems.
Later this year I plan on releasing a Personality Programming course specifically for puppies, so make sure you stay tuned for more information on when that will be released.
Until then, my Hands Off Dog Training course is the next best thing I’d recommend using on your dog, as it uses all positive reinforcement techniques to teach your dog the foundational skills he’ll need for life.
Consider it a foundation for sculpting your puppies personality. It doesn’t cover all aspects, but it does teach the skills needed to start with.
Mistake #3: Accidentally Training your Dog to Misbehave
The third and final major mistake that I want to help you avoid, is realizing how almost every behavior problem your dog currently has, or will develop in the future, is a direct result of you “Accidentally Training” your dog to behave that way.
The most common types of accidental training mistakes are:
- Rewarding with Attention
- Caving to your dog’s desires
- Making the situation worse by overreacting
First let’s address rewarding with attention. How to train dogs, Attention, food and play are the three tools a dog trainer will use to reward a dog for doing a behavior. Used correctly, these are powerful tools that allow us to get dog’s to do a WIDE variety of behaviors. But used incorrectly accidentally reward bad behaviors.
One VERY common example of this is owners who let their dog’s in from the backyard when they hear them bark. Typically this problem starts off innocently with a dog barking to get attention because it’s owner has forgotten to let it back in from outside. The dog would rather be inside with the family, so it barks to be remembered.
Often times, the owner didn’t mean to leave the dog outside, and absent mindedly reacts by going to the door and letting the dog in, because they feel guilty for leaving him outside.
But do this at your own PERIL! Because whether you realize it or not, you’ve just rewarded your dog for barking with your attention. And this will INCREASE the likelihood of that behavior occurring in the future.
So what should you do instead?
With my own dog, I was aware of this law of training before it ever became a problem, so I instructed my wife that we were to NEVER, EVER, not even ONCE open the door for our dog within 60 seconds of him barking. And if we wanted the dog to lay down, we were to wait until he was sitting or laying down on the back steps.
This taught my dog that he needs to sit or lay down quietly if he wants to be let in, and that barking always makes it take longer to be let in.
The result…. He NEVER barks to be let in, because he’s never been let in for barking!
Now let’s move on to caving to your dog’s desires. What I specifically mean by this is when you first tell your dog “NO” for doing something 1, 2, 3, 4 or however many times, and then eventually just let him do the behavior.
This is like the toddler crying to his mother in the grocery store isle for a bar of candy. The mother says “No”, what seems like 100 times, before eventually caving into her child’s desires. What the mother who does this doesn’t understand is that while she may have temporarily stopped the whining child, she has just trained the child to whine LONGER anytime she wants anything.
This same principle works for dog’s too!
You MUST be anal when training your dog. Whatever you ask him to do, you must stick to those requirements, otherwise you risk training him to just wine, beg or bark louder and longer the next time he wants it.
If you’ll follow this advice and do your best to avoid making these three dog training mistakes I PROMISE you that life with your dog will be much more easy going.
If you’d like to make sure you get off on the right track, remember to go through my Hands Off Dog Training program, and spend a little time every day training your dog. how to train dog, It’ll be the smartest investment towards learning how to train a dog.
