I don’t get why people are so bent on arguing over which comes first, the chicken or the egg. As far as I’m concerned, I want both my chicken and my egg. Fried chicken is definitely perfect together with cheese omelet and battered chicken constitutes eggs.

So, there, let’s not argue anymore. Let us just start keeping both and we will be happier.

In my opinion, the best animals to nurture are chickens. This is because you get both chicken and eggs. Raising hog can only give you pork and a lot of crap, unlike chickens where you can have a package of both eggs and their meat. Cows however, are great to raise also as you can gain milk from them, but in order for you to effectively raise one you need a large farm. For keeping chickens, a backyard is enough.

The very first aspect involved if you wish to raise chickens is that you must be willing to work hard. Keeping chickens require your attention and care, though not that much as they are not needy, so that you can have healthy eggs and meat that is so tender. You must monitor them on a regular basis and you must understand them.

Keeping chickens is just the same as petting dogs, only, with chickens, you have an ulterior motive. Chickens too, can provide us with enjoyment and comfort like dogs.

Fresh eggs are different from those you bought in the market. Fresh eggs that are straight from the farm tastes a lot different, that is for sure. There is not that much different though but it tastes better; just like cooking very fresh fish. Yep, they taste different.

It can be very difficult though in keeping chickens if you reside in a big City. A lot of your neighbours would complain and probably curse you because chickens can be quite noisy at times.

Keeping chickens however is not illegal but you have to follow guidelines, especially in Cities where it is implemented. Among the rules is that homeowners can keep up to three chickens in the backyard but the hen house should be at least 20 feet away from the nearest residence. Surely, apartment owners cannot raise chickens. Not only that many individuals would oppose but you are also risking yourself with diseases because a chicken can’t be as healthy in the city than in farm areas or places where there are less people, building and pollution. A couple of diseases that have terrified the whole world were Coccidia and Avian Influenza.

For those of you who have any extra questions regarding this article, I highly recommend you to have a look at my website about raising chickens.

There are two sorts of chicken size – the common and the bantam. Any breeds of chicken can either be regular or bantam and their hens can both lay eggs.

In bantam eggs the yolk is considerably larger than albumen. Besides being small, bantam eggs is just like any other eggs. It may be eaten, it is often hatched and it might be sold.

When bantam eggs are eaten your consumption is far more than the regular eggs primarily because it’s small. The beneficial factor about bantam eggs is that it really is less expensive than the standard eggs in the market. This egg is treated also like a usual standard egg. When it really is required to be hatched the similar care would be to be given to the bantam hen to hatch it effectively and hatch probably the most of the eggs.

Bantam adapts and leaves nicely in confinement. The hens are known to be incredibly fierce as a mother in taking care of his eggs or chicks. The rooster even though modest in size tends to be aggressive in protecting its hen which will be the most popular entertaining point of raising them.

o    A huge factor in choosing your breed of chicken is the consideration of exactly where you live. Neither can be a smaller coop. Planning must be noticed when developing the coop, as this is the chicken’s household plus the spot where they are going to invest probably the most time. Ideally, for any chicken, a significant garden need to be a feature within your home, to allow the chickens to run freely. The climate exactly where you live also can pose a problem. If you are close to the equator, it tends to be warmer, and no matter if you live about it or beneath it, it gets cooler.

Purebred chickens have a tendency to be extra fragile and prone to illness than those which have been crossbred, so if you’re searching for a good breed, crossbreeding a Silkie and a Bantam has been reported as one of the best breeds of chicken you may get, as they are quiet laid back. Not as pretty as other chickens, they’re the cheaper method.

Chicken has a lot of attributes but unlike most animals in the food chain, except for their typical if not initial distrust, they have none for defense. Aside from that, chickens do not move fast, are noisy, meaty, and tasty, that makes them the ideal bird to prey upon. To protect chickens from predators and other animals, observe try the following.

Introduce human smell. The scent of humans is very repulsive to animals. It has often been claimed that the reason that man is the least to be preyed upon is due to human smell. There is not much study to support this but the fact is man will only be preyed upon when a predator is starving and there is nothing else available, when a predator is sick and is unable to hunt or is very old that their movement and ability has been limited, when the animal is threatened with its back to the wall and escape routes are closed and sometimes when a man is mistaken for another identity. To do this, hang bags of hair and used clothing inside the chicken coop and the fence preferably near entrances.

You should keep the predators away from your building. The predators existing in your area will largely influence this. Methods used by different predators are not identical. A consultation with local authorities or with animal control in the area will be needed. Using chemical deterrents is another option.  A perfect solution is to have an electric chicken fence. Apart from these, you can remove empty spaces and other places which may serve as hiding places for the predators. Predators will desist from coming near the place if you have dogs around. chicken coop

Construct strong chicken houses.  Make the chickens living areas without gaps and holes.  If you use slats to make your chicken house floors, put the wires underneath to avoid predators from digging under the bottom.  Put wires over the weak pots so they won’t bite through and latch the chicken hutch all the time when the chickens are resting in their chicken shacks.

Chickens get attacked by predators. The building housing the chickens should be protected well with a fence which should be laid around the building starting from about 10″ below theground so that these predators cannot attack the chickens either from below or above the ground

If you have a chicken wire fence, put the planks at least 8 inches down in the ground, plus place footplates close to the fence.  The fence should be at least five feet tall to stop foxes from leaping over it.  Let the top of the fence remain jagged for added protection.  Normally foxes are able to leap as high as their height.  But there are some foxes that may leap higher than this.  Letting the fence top remain jagged can catch them if not cut their stomachs on it.

Other ways to shield your chickens from other animals may be suggested by other farmers in your town who have been taking care of animals for more time than you have.

Chickens love to peck. Normally though they do not peck their own eggs but when it starts and nothing is done to keep them from doing it, they would develop the taste of the eggs and the habit could form. To prevent chickens from eating their eggs, try the following.

Feed your chicken grits. Grits are purchased in your local farm supply store or you could make your own. To make grits, roast eggshells until they are brownish and crunchy. Pound the shells and mix it with chicken feed. Chicken that does not have enough calcium in their diet will try to find it elsewhere and eggshells are an alternative source. Make sure that the feed has enough calcium and protein.

The Chicken eggshell if weak, breaks with the result the chicken will start pecking on it. Weak eggshells indicate that either the chicken lacks  calcium,Vitamin D3, protein or might be suffering from infection. This has to be checked as also the feed composition. chicken coop

If you’re feeding properly and the chickens are well, it’s possible that the nest box is not soft enough. Place soft wadding in the nest so the egg can be kept safe even when the chicken is moving about the box. Put the box somewhere dark. Chickens tend to be less mobile out of the light and are less agitated and so less likely to stand on their eggs. Don’t put too many chickens in the box – four hens or fewer is ideal.

Keep chickens busy by giving them hanging vegetable scraps to peck tied to a string. Gather the shells and don’t feed them to the chickens. Likewise, clean up the coop, do not feed dirty eggs to chickens. Making the chickens eat the egg will start them developing a taste for it, making it a habit. Chicken may start pecking at the eggs if they are bored.

When the eggs are reduced, you could find that out when a chicken has egg residues in the beak. Isolate the chicken pecking on the eggs, because the eggs were pecked on. To monitor the production of the eggs better, collect eggs as often as twice a day, if you can. Feed the chicken with liquid milk for a while, when the chicken is isolated. If isolating the chicken is not possible, try trimming the upper beak.

An additional way to avoid chickens from eating their eggs is to put golf balls in the nest.  Nibbling on a golf ball will stop this custom from forming.  If you do this and your egg supply is still not up to par, look for rodents and see if they are bothering your nest box.  Whatever the situation, stop the chickens from eating their eggs since when this custom is formed, it is nearly impossible to quit.

Chicken coops need to meet the needs of both the chickens and the chicken rancher – you! Be sure the chickens are comfortable. Give them enough room to move around and spread their wings. Relaxed, unworried chickens will give you more eggs, so give them as much of a normal, stress-free life as you can.

Providing more space also helps them feel normal by encouraging their instinct to peck at the ground. Spreading some feed in the morning can also help encourage the natural pecking instinct.

Excellent egg production also requires a secure, comfortable nesting area for your hens. Nesting boxes come in all shapes and sizes, based on regional preferences and local climate, but all should include ample space for your chickens. Large nesting areas allow chickens to find the right spot to lay their eggs. Hen chickens will look for safe places to sit on their eggs and ensure the viability of their chicks. A secluded place away from the feeding area is important.

Give your chickens cut straw or some hay to mimic what they might find in the wild. Fluffy sawdust can work too, but try to avoid wood chips. Young chicks often mistake it for their food; eating too much wood can kill them. For mature chickens, however, wood chips can be a possible choice.

Then there is your own ease of use. The eggs must be easy to collect not only because you will be doing it quite often, but also because it means that you do not unduly disturb the chickens and their nests. By avoiding such disturbance you keep your chickens happy and laying. Maybe you have a box nest, with a few adjoining nesting areas. A hinged lid can work will for this type of nest. If you leave your nesting area open, make sure that you can easily reach into all the corners.

Your chickens need protection from the elements and from predators. A well made roof to keep out the rain, solid walls to block the wind, some ventilation to keep the air fresh. If you live in snow country, keep a heat lamp or other heat source in the nesting area. Just designing your coop properly can provide a lot of security, but remember that placement is also important. Keep the coop away from high-traffic areas will help your hens feel safe and secure.

Now you are ready to build chicken coops. Giving your chickens a happy home where they feel safe and secure will guarantee you plenty of eggs each morning. And that will ensure that your own home stays happy and healthy!
