Raising our own chickens in the backyard has many return. First thing, we can save up from buying eggs in the grocery as we can readily get these from our own chickens.

The second thing, it could be the start of a small business where we can deliver eggs to the local supermarket. We can also opt to o naturally grow our chickens if we want to.

If we have no idea on how to raise chickens, there are tons of books books and information online that we can get hold of to learn all about raising chickens and building chicken coops.

    Get Down to The Basics

Before actually getting a few chickens to raise, we first need to build them a coop where they can be raised. Sometimes, the type of chickens that we want to raise dictate the dimensions of the chicken coop that we should build as some need a bit more space because they can grow bigger than others (read more: Chicken Coop Dimensions).

But in general, each chicken would require about 2 to 3 sq. ft. for their personal space. If we do have more room to spare, 4 sq. ft. per chicken is ideal. They would also need to have sufficient room height for them to be able to move comfortably.

As for the nesting boxes, these can be – with no trouble – got from feed suppliers or we can likewise build our own. The suggested size for these boxes is fifteen by fifteen by eleven and 1/8 inches.

This will give them an adequate amount of room to lay their eggs without crushing them.

If we have even more space in the backyard, it is ideal too, to build a chicken run with chicken wires to give the birds freedom to roam in a bigger space to catch some sun during the day.

We can also put in a roost for them to sit on. A simple two by two inches of board will work just fine.
