There are two sorts of chicken size – the common and the bantam. Any breeds of chicken can either be regular or bantam and their hens can both lay eggs.

In bantam eggs the yolk is considerably larger than albumen. Besides being small, bantam eggs is just like any other eggs. It may be eaten, it is often hatched and it might be sold.

When bantam eggs are eaten your consumption is far more than the regular eggs primarily because it’s small. The beneficial factor about bantam eggs is that it really is less expensive than the standard eggs in the market. This egg is treated also like a usual standard egg. When it really is required to be hatched the similar care would be to be given to the bantam hen to hatch it effectively and hatch probably the most of the eggs.

Bantam adapts and leaves nicely in confinement. The hens are known to be incredibly fierce as a mother in taking care of his eggs or chicks. The rooster even though modest in size tends to be aggressive in protecting its hen which will be the most popular entertaining point of raising them.

o    A huge factor in choosing your breed of chicken is the consideration of exactly where you live. Neither can be a smaller coop. Planning must be noticed when developing the coop, as this is the chicken’s household plus the spot where they are going to invest probably the most time. Ideally, for any chicken, a significant garden need to be a feature within your home, to allow the chickens to run freely. The climate exactly where you live also can pose a problem. If you are close to the equator, it tends to be warmer, and no matter if you live about it or beneath it, it gets cooler.

Purebred chickens have a tendency to be extra fragile and prone to illness than those which have been crossbred, so if you’re searching for a good breed, crossbreeding a Silkie and a Bantam has been reported as one of the best breeds of chicken you may get, as they are quiet laid back. Not as pretty as other chickens, they’re the cheaper method.

Chicken nest box design comes in all sizes and shapes. The suggestions for better designs also vary. The large variety of suggestions speaks so much about personal experiences and thereby the preference. In building chicken nest boxes, there are designs that stand out in view of practicality and function.

First though, a good chicken nest box must be planned to get the chicken lay eggs in manners that are most productive. The basics are the same. You build a box, put in some straw or wood shavings and when the time comes so too the eggs. But when there is low egg production chances are something must be done to improve the nest box. For as much eggs as possible, here are suggestions:

Frequently, chicken nest boxes are constructed as shelters for more chickens and their are practical purposes for this.  The truth is when the nest boss cramped, chickens like to use the floor to lay their eggs and the eggs can become dirty, broken up, and sometimes they eat them which decreases the production.  Chickens really produce more when they have smaller nest boxes.  A box big enough for four chickens together is adequate.  The more small it is the better it is.  If the nesting box is smaller,  there is less space for the chickens to throw the straw or wood shavings around, making less mess and the straw stays where it should stay.

The roof of the chicken nest boxes are sloped for the purpose that chickens do not roost on the roof. A roof not angled steeply will invite chickens to roost there and when that happens expect where the eggs will be. Inside the nest box, keep at least two inches of straw but if you could have wood shavings (pine is preferable) that is even better.

If you could provide a chute where the eggs will roll after being laid, and collected at a separate place, the added cost of the chute will be paid for in terms of more eggs that could be used. It will also be practical as frequent intrusions disturbs chicken and that destroys eggs in the process let alone the muck that you will help splatter around. chicken coop designs

Rather than having an egg chute, build a chicken nest box with doors placed in the back so you can gather the eggs from the outside without bothering the chickens too much.  Make a ledge at the opening to avoid eggs from falling out when you open the doors.  A two inch ledge is adequate for the eggs to remain safe.  Also, put a ledge in the entryway for the nest boxes that can be used as a step for the chickens.  This will stop eggs from dropping inside the chicken coop when the chick rolls around before laying more eggs.  Also the ledges will maintain the straw in the nest.

Sizes of the chicken nest box is vary. generally they are about 9″. For a limited number of chickens a 12″ square box is sufficient with a cave like structure, cold and dark

Chickens could be kept in many urban areas, in some chickens are less welcome. If the intention however is to keep one as a pet, that is already accepted practice. Some are even keeping reptiles for pets but just to be on the safe side, check for local laws and regulations. The local animal control office in your municipality would know how many you can keep and whether that would include a rooster. The main deterrent here is that these birds may fall under noise ordinances and so check out first as it is very easy to be emotionally attached to these birds. In Urban areas that used to be a farming community, the ordinances are more relaxed. Either way, keeping chicken in the city does not require a license.

You need to be ready with your choice of chicken by the time the ordinances end. If you would like to go for pets then you could probably opt for Bantams. Bantams are a breed of chicken which are very small in size and are one fourths the size of a regular chicken. You can compare this to having a toy dog breed. Some of the popular bantam breeds that are available include the barred Plymouth rocks and the Rhode Island Reds. These two breeds also have a good temperament. Cochin also belongs to the Bantam breed. If you are looking for a bigger bantem breed, then you could consider Buff orbington and they are also mild in nature. These are only some of the varieties that have been mentioned. If you are looking for more varities you can also search the web

Chickens are very sociable and love to have plenty of room to roam around in. So even though you may prefer to have your pet chicken roam around your house or sleep in your bedroom, it will likely prefer its own coop in which to roost, and its own nest box to lay eggs in. You can use the materials you already have, or those which are readily available at your local farmers market or hardware store to build one. All you have to keep in mind is to allow a two feet square space for every bantam, as well as plenty of room for your chicken to roam so they can get plenty of exercise.

Chickens do not need a rooster to produce chicks, expect then and make provisions that they would multiply soon even if you would not need all the eggs they produce. Keep at least two chickens, as chicken prefer to huddle together.Double the spaces allotted to them because even when they are sociable,  especially when they feel crowded, as they could be cranky at times and might start pecking at each other. chicken coop designs

Keeping chickens in the city will attract predators. When you build a chicken coop, insure that the coop is very well secured and could never be accessed by these predators. If you love cats, it would be most likely that you know your cat is not the kind that would attack and could live side by side with a chicken as against cats, bantam chickens have no way of defending themselves. Rodents however are a different issue.

For people who are getting started with raising chickens one of the main issues is the right chicken feeding proportions, the heating of some of the feeds, the kind and the quality of the feed. Another worry considered seriously is the chicken actually starving because the feeding failed in one way or the other.

No. In fact it is not. Chicken may be very low maintenance birds but they have survived longer than us and their population is several hundred folds over ours. True they are prone to diseases and pests but their population is a testament that chickens are survivors. More so with hands that care.

Chickens nibble on nearly anything.  They scratch at worms, they are content with human leftovers, they enjoy pellets, seeds, peels, bugs and slugs.  They care about eating bread as much as they do chomping on a cockroach, and when something is wrong with them, they eat grass or pebbles.  They are most satisfied when they have freedom to roam around for food and they will realize what is edible and what is not each time.  Otherwise, people can fix the most elaborate food for them but if they don’t have a taste for it, they won’t eat it.

So once in a while, if the size is manageable, let the chicken roam around, with supervision of course. Because if chickens are caged their diet is only as varied as those that are fed to them.

While the chickens are in their pens, there are two types of feeds. The first and most important is the corn mixed with other seeds. The second is the pellets. There are three kinds of pellet feeds. The layers mash, the crumbled pellet and the pellets. These variations typically have similar composition. The different names are only to identify the grade of the milling. Layers mash for example is crushed to almost powdery consistency to make it easier for chicks to peck and digest.chicken coop designs

Chickens get by well with one measure of corn mixed with one measure of pellets. The crumbles are milled to rough consistency, ideal for young chickens and the pellets for the full grown. There is no cause for worry if you can throw in other food as they will mostly eat that also.

You need to feed chicken with something to help them digest their food – grit is ideal. If they don’t have it, they tend to peck at gravel. You can either buy the grit from your usual retailer or make some yourself. Bake eggshells in the oven until they’re dark, crush them up and mix them into their food. Don’t ever use oyster shells for this – even when powdered, they have sharp pointed edges.

Chicken feeding is never complicated. Simple steps like this could provide eggs for the table or for hatching. You will know if something is wrong when eggs are getting scarce but then you would easily find a way to correct whatever the cause may be.

As part of the local food movement, more and more people living in cities and suburban areas are keeping chickens in their backyards. If you’ve decided to join them, you may be considering buying one of the many flat-packed chicken coops for sale online. Some points to consider when comparing the wide range of coops available are design, size, materials, ventilation, lighting and, of course, price.

Certain design features can help keep your chickens happy and healthy. Look for coops with a hen house that is raised off the ground with an attached ramp to allow the birds access. This will help keep the nesting area dry and free of vermin. A pull-out tray beneath the hen house will make it easy to keep clean. A nesting box that can be accessed from outside the coop via a pull-up lid will allow you to collect eggs without disturbing the hens.

It’s important to choose the right size coop for the number of chickens you intend to keep. A general rule of thumb is six square feet of covered space per laying hen, including both the nesting area and the run. To house four chickens in comfort, you should be looking for a coop that has a floor area of at least 24 square feet.

Pay attention to the materials description when considering a coop to purchase. Wood should be treated with a preserver to make it water-repellent and rot-resistant. Panels should have a thickness of half an inch or more to ensure that the coop is sturdy enough to withstand wind and weather. The sides of the chicken run should be covered in galvanized steel mesh to protect the birds from predators.

The hen house must be adequately ventilated to allow air to circulate among the nesting birds. This will prevent the build-up of carbon dioxide and ammonia, reduce odors and allow excess moisture to evaporate. Air vents should be located above the nesting area to avoid subjecting the chickens to cold drafts.

Exposing the nesting area to light will encourage the hens to lay more and better eggs. The coop should have at least one glass or Perspex window which will provide the chickens with sunlight all year round. Ideally this should be on hinges so that it can be opened in summer for extra ventilation.

When comparing the prices of chicken coops for sale, be sure to take the materials and features into account. A well-designed, sturdy coop which will protect your hens from predators and increase their length and quality of life will cost more than a basic model. Keep in mind that a compromise on quality at the outset can lead to further expenses in the long run.

    Chicken swim

In a small village outside of Sussex I have a small farm. I was wondering if chicken could swim last weekend. I have never seen a chicken swim and I wanted to see if they can swim like ducks. I got 2 swimming pools in between the farm and the house, one for family use and another for the ducks. Ok fine it’s not a swimming pool for ducks it’s just a pond to be honest. Other than being good on laying eggs and being the tastiest meat in the World, what else can this chicken be good at?

So as the lady has done here I did the same thing to one of the chickens. And yes they do know how to swim, but as from the video you can see they do not like water hence they try to get out of there as soon as they can. Oh and don’t forget to clean your swimming pool with swimming pool chemicals and swimming pool filters after the chicken is thrown for personal use of course. I don’t think you would want to swim in a dirty pool?

I know this is a crazy post but did you know chickens could swim? Yes there is 1 out of 10 who would have known about this but for others this is definitely a new thing. I also asked my friend, if he knew chickens could swim. He said he did try it once but his chicken started to drown. Then he had to jump and save the chicken. Though it was a bad experience because she was in the process of laying eggs.

By the way I am not saying to try this with your chickens and throwing them into a pond. This post is just to give you an information on if chickens can swim or not. Chicken is best at when they are used for such as meat and eggs. This post is informational.
