Looking After Pets
Best Free Advice For Looking After Your Pets-
March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceWhen a dog wants to lie down and take a nap, it isn’t really concerned whether it’s lying on dog bedding or an actual dog bed. Half the time, the two are virtually the same thing anyway. A couple of blankets, which humans would consider bedding, can be a perfectly fine bed for a dog. A flat cushioned pad with a fleece lining might stand with a foot on both sides of the fence. And in between you’ve got the sort of pet bed that has elements of both a traditional bed and the sort of things that would be thought of as bedding.
Some bedding for dogs is as simple as a bunch of blankets. If that’s the sort of bed your dog likes, then you can get these at places like the Salvation Army or other second hand stores. You don’t necessarily have to get elaborate with them, especially if you use them mainly to line the dog’s crate or to cover furniture. Yet many websites or stores where there are dog beds for sale will also have blankets, throws, and variations on them, designed especially for your dog. Some specially created blankets may have inserts for heating pads, or might be designed to wrap and towel off the dog after a bath.
There is also dog bedding that doesn’t quite fall into a defined shape like a bed with a frame, but is far more elaborate than a throw or a blanket. This type of bed would include something like the Pawds created at the Le Pet Petite Boutique website (www.furfection.com). These luxurious dog beds are circular and very plush. They can lie flat, providing a thick, airy bed, or the ties that go around the edges can cinch together, pulling those edges in to create a round, walled nest for the dog to curl up in.
Other dog bedding serves a functional purpose other than just giving the dog something to lie on. For example, the Scottish dog supplies company, Tuffies, makes a cover for their beds that can wick away moisture, so that a wet dog can stay lying on a fairly dry cover and not be soggy and damp as it’s drying off. There are many different categories of bedding, and many bed accessories that accompany them. Whether you’re looking at simple blankets or quite elaborate beds and bedding setups, you have countless options for making your dog’s sleeping arrangements comfortable.

March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceYou take your dog to the vet, get its teeth cleaned and its claws clipped, and take good care of its health. So why would designer dog beds be so out of the ordinary? These pieces of dog bed furniture might be regarded as simply another means of taking care of the dog, while simultaneously keeping its bed from clashing with your own home decor. If you’re buying a dog bed anyway, why not have a little fun with it? While peeking at the websites, it’s clear that dog bed creators are certainly enjoying themselves.
If you’re rather into a “decadent luxury” mode, then the designer dog beds from a website like Le Pet Petite (www.furfection.com) may be just the thing for your dog as well. Their Pawd pet bed is a large round very plush cushion that can open flat and puffy, or the edges can be drawn in with a large tie. When it’s pulled in like that, your dog can feel that it’s in a “nest,” or do a bit of burrowing. You can go all “pretty dog” with a pink version, or be very dramatic with the “Cappuccino Pawd,” rich chocolate brown on one side and cream color on the other. All the Pawds are reversible too.
However, you may prefer to go with casual comfort in designer doggie beds, or even choose a sportier look. You can find these too, with a little hunting. At Oh My Dog Supplies (www.ohmydogsupplies.com), you’ll find the “Casual Dog Couch,” which looks like a big overstuffed arm chair, complete with thick cushion, rounded arms and a curved back. Or perhaps you’d prefer dog beds like the “Furcedes Benz” from the Fetchdog website (www.fetchdog.com). It’s probably no surprise that the bed is shaped like a car, with wheels of cloth, windshield and headlights.
When it comes right down to it, designer dog beds aren’t necessarily a matter of pampering or going overboard. They might cost slightly more than other types of dog beds, and yet most of them aren’t a whole lot more. Some of them are more plush and would probably be more comfortable than ordinary beds. If you’re already willing to provide a heated dog bed for a pet that has arthritis or old, creaking bones, then why not get a comfortable bed that also looks nice and might even match the home décor too?

March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceIf your dog has arthritis, or is aging and getting less spry, then one of the best dog beds to buy might just be a memory foam bed. Memory foam in human beds molds around the person, giving total support to each part of their body. The tiny polyurethane cells then return to their original shape when the person gets up and the cells get cooler. This type of bed is used to help people with arthritis or with spine or hip injuries, so manufacturers of pet supplies eventually realized that this type of pet bed might provide the same benefits for dogs with such problems.
A large dog bed of memory foam might be especially helpful, because dogs of greater size frequently suffer from a joint disease called hip dysplasia. It affects not only the fit of the hip joints but the muscles around the rump. Memory foam can mold itself to support the dog’s body completely. And this type of bed can even help relieve discomfort a dog might suffer from being overweight. Such a bed might be one of the best dog beds for large dogs with hip dysplasia, or dogs that need good support until their weight can be brought down.
Some people provide heated dog beds for their companions with joint problems, but it’s possible that memory foam beds do just as well as those. One advantage of memory foam is its breath-ability. This means that it retains heat in wintertime, but is cooler in the summer when overheating might otherwise be a problem. The extra winter warmth of memory foam beds is what may make them the beds for arthritic animals, because not only would they retain the dog’s body heat when it’s needed, but they’d also provide protection against floor temperatures that might get a bit too cool at night.
On the other hand, these might not be the best dog beds if you have a pet that really loves chewing things. But the worry about the dog chewing the polyurethane mattress may be mitigated by getting a durable cover for the foam. It may be worth it, if you can give your best animal friend an orthopedic dog bed that will provide extra support for its aching joints, and some comforting warmth on cool nights. This isn’t being overindulgent, but being humane and helping to improve your dog’s health.

March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceAny dog owner wants to be sure they pick from the best quality dog beds that are out there, but that goal becomes even more important if the owner and their family are making the switch to an organic, eco-friendly lifestyle. If that’s a change you also find yourself in the middle of, then you’re probably already wondering what might be the best dog bed to fit this new way of life. Does it matter that much, when it’s “just” a dog bed? As a part of your environment and in terms of the planet’s general health, yes it does. And fortunately, there are some products available that are ecologically responsible, yet also sturdy and cleanable.
You don’t necessarily have to go all-organic immediately. Remember the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle), after all. The best dog bed for your new green lifestyle may actually be something recycled rather than something brand new and organic. Take the dog bed duvets, for example, at the Molly Mutt website (www.mollymutt.com). You might buy one of their rectangle dog beds, made of pre-shrunk, washable cotton, and then fill them with your own recycled fabrics, such as old blankets, rags and old clothes.
Changing lifestyles is never easy no matter what your rationale or how you go about it. It is going to take some research to find the best dog bed to fit an eco-friendly way of living. Your dog bed shopping may take some time, and if you’re responsible you’ll need to investigate the “green” claims of any seller or manufacturer. Just keep in mind that you want your switch to be complete and thorough. Once the work is done and even the dog bed has been changed, you won’t regret the time and work it took.

March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceToilet training your dog properly is essential if you want it to be healthy and happy, as well as ensuring your sanity and clean surroundings during this very important task. Unwanted urination and defecation are the top reasons owners give their canines away or surrender them to a shelter, where they may not survive.
Your puppies paper training should begin the minute you bring him home. Plan ahead and have plenty of newspaper and lots of patience. Knowing what to expect during this period will make this process easier.
If you are unable to supervise the pup around the clock, it will take at least six months to totally train your dog. Do not attempt to rush this process, or there will be more frustration than progress.
Keep in mind that pups under six months simply have no bladder or bowel control and really have no idea they are suppose to use a certain area for the toilet. They wander around, letting it fall where it will. Do not scold or punish.
Indoor potty training begins with choosing a “den” for your pup. A small room free of debris or other items that could cause harm is best. Line the whole floor with newspaper. The youngster will most likely chew the paper as well as toilet on it!
You pup will get into the routine of going on the paper, and sometime down the line you will notice he has chosen a preferred spot to go on. This is good, because now the real paper training begins.
Slowly diminish the area of paper over time, beginning with those that are farthest away from his preferred spot. Gradually, the numbers of papers needed will be few. If the pup misses the papers, they have been taken away too soon.
Paper training a dog does take time and consistency, but the results are well worth the initial effort, because once taught properly, you will never have to teach it again. When your pup is eliminating himself reliably in the same spot, you may very slowly, inch by inch, move the papers to your preferred location. This will ready your dog for total house training. The more time you can devote to this first step, the faster it will proceed, but again, do not try to rush this process or you will have to start all over.
Your pup can begin to spend more time away from his den with the rest of the family once his bladder and bowels show good control. Be sure to take him back to his toilet area frequently. Most pups require the toilet every 45 minutes, up waking, and after eating or drinking.
Allow the pup access to one room at a time, and only when you can supervise him. Return him to his den when necessary, and be sure to use lots of praise when he does his business in the correct spot! Following these tips will make your puppies paper training a total success.

March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceA well-train dog usually leads a happier and healthier life and its owner also can enjoy a trouble-free lifelong companion. Dog training – basic obedience, house and potty training are therefore essential and important to a dog’s education.
The conventional method of dog training tips and guide would be to list a series of things that you should “Do” and you might even know the A-Z of dog training! But sometimes what should be done can be said best by telling what should not be done.
This article seeks to list 18 “Don’t” when you train your dog. The reasons for the don’ts will become evident as the lessons continue and each one is based upon the distinctive psychology of the dog’s mind.
- DON’T punish your dog while you are angry or lack control of yourself.
- DON’T punish your dog with the lead or any instrument of training or anything he should associate with duty or pleasure.
- DON’T sneak up on your dog or grab him from the rear.
- DON’T chase your dog to catch him; he must come to you or run after you.
- DON’T coax your dog to you and then turn upon him with the whip. You will repent the deception.
- DON’T trick or fool or taunt your dog. It is cruel and discrepant to tease your canine to come to you when he cannot.
- DON’T punish a dog by stepping on his paws needlessly. They are exceedingly sensitive. Don’t twist his ears playfully or otherwise. Never strike him on the backbone, in the face or on the ears.
- DON’T grab your dog or reach for him quickly. He should never fear you, should not be made nervous by you, and should feel that punishment given is deserved.
- DON’T nag your dog; don’t be giving orders to him constantly; don’t pester him with your shoutings.
- DON’T praise a dog for doing a certain act, then at a later time, scold him for doing the same act. If you permit him to bite your toes today and think it fun, do not strike him for doing it tomorrow, when you are not in good humor. Consistency is a chief virtue in dog training.
- DON’T train your dog immediately or soon after he has eaten.
- DON’T lose patience with a puppy younger than six months. Never throw or kick a puppy nor lift him by the head or leg or skin of the neck.
- DON’T train him in feats requiring much strength or endurance until he is at least six months old.
- DON’T work your dog without some short rest or play periods during training. A five-minute rest for every fifteen minutes of training is desirable.
- DON’T permit everyone to give commands to your dog. While you are training him, he must be a one-man dog, depending on you alone to feed him and care for him.
- DON’T consider tricks the chief end or the chief part of training. Usefulness is the object sought in all instruction of the dog. Acts that spring naturally from the dog’s instincts are to be fostered.
- DON’T expect your dog to be a wonderful dog after a few weeks of training; four months to a year may be necessary in order to make the master proud of him, but the work is worth the effort. Training never ends.
- DON’T jump to the conclusion that your dog is dumb. He may differ with you believing that the trainer should know more than the dog.
To end, try to remember these 18 Don’ts rules, enjoy training your canine and most importantly have lots of fun along the way!

March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceMy family run an animal sanctuary in Birmingham, England. Even though we love what we tend to do, we tend to feel that some individuals want to grasp {that a} pet ought to be a future commitment. They should not be seen as just a little bit of fun which they’ll then dispose of after they get bored.
Several people arrive at the animal sanctuary with their pets, that are mainly dogs, with several excuses on why they are not able to seem when or look after them. I am positive many of their reasons are valid however am conjointly aware that several others are just an excuse to offload them.
The excuses they provide are varied:
I’ve got recently divorced from my husband and can no longer afford to stay this dog as a pet
The dog has began to bite my children
The dog is just too difficult to handle and is destroying my furniture
We tend to have recently moved into a flat. One amongst their rules is that no animals can live in these flats
The dog barks to a lot of and it’s upsetting the neighbours
Our different animals do not like the dog
The dog affects my health
I am too sick to appear after my dog
It is not our role to question these reasons but what we tend to then need to try and do is to seek out another appropriate home for the dogs. This is often easier said than done as we have a tendency to would like to ensure {that the} new homeowners can be ready to worry for them, for hopefully the length of their life.
We also keep several of the dogs as our own pets, particularly those which no one else appears to want. One such dog is called Cassie. She is filled with life and has been sick treated it seems when she was a puppy. 0.5 of her left ear is missing and she or he is seemingly quite scared of men.
Cassie is would like of an enormous amount of care and attention. She can be too spirited from time to time which is presumably why three people who tried to re-home her, have bought her back. She is not aggressive in any method but does tend to jump up at people.
What we have a tendency to did with Cassie and what we tend to will continue to do, is to provide her tons of affection however also a very little bit of coaching of what is smart and what’s not acceptable. It takes a very long time, but she is now ready to understand {that the} jumping isn’t wanted and that she needs to chill out at times.
Cassie is popping into a wonderful dog to own around the house and now feels for the primary time as half of a family.
With a little a lot of patience most alternative dogs will turn out this way. This can be why we want more folks to require a lot of responsibility and to relinquish their animals more of a chance to settle into their homes, and to get used to a new set of rules.
Having animals as pets can be very rewarding, nearly as rewarding as having a child. A dog but will rarely answer you back.

March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceChoosing a dog collar doesn’t have to be difficult. Consider for a moment what needs you will be meeting with your purchase, as there are small dog collars and large dog collars. They are available in a wide variety of sizes because each dog’s neck is different. One of the most important reasons to make sure your pet wears a dog collar is to ensure your contact details are engraved somewhere on the collar or on a tag attached to the collar. A leather dog collar makes a great utility collar, while a shock collar can help curb unwanted behaviors.
Bigger breeds generally use between a fourteen and twenty inch collar. You can correctly measure to fit the right collar by placing two fingers between the dog’s neck and the collar. If you are able to slip your two fingers in between, then it is a good fit. Make sure the collar doesn’t fit too tightly so that your pet is able to breathe normally.
Leather makes a really great dog collar. A leather dog collar is truly strong, long-wearing and weather-proof, and is a comfortable fit for canines. There are even flat collars for animals with shorter hair, and rounded collars for long-haired breeds. These specially shaped leather collars are used to stop the breakage of hair around your dog’s neck. It is best to try to keep the dog collar as thin as you can while still maintaining the strength of the item so that your dog stays as comfortable as possible.
Perhaps a bark collar is what you need if excessive barking is an issue for your dog. Most bark-control collars use two types of bark-detection technology; either vibrations from the dog’s throat or external sounds. Know that neither type is totally infallible. The vibration type can be set off by movement and the sound type can be triggered by external sounds other than the dog barking. Both types have been proven to be effective in helping control your dogs barking in a humane fashion. The best dog training collars use both methods at the same time to reduce false readings and help bring a dog’s barking under control.
There are also many different styles of dog collars on the market. There are spiked, jeweled and even gold-plated collars available. Some pet owners even go as far as buying small dog clothes and rhinestone dog collars to match. Collars range from simple and practical, like a leather dog collar, to personalized and bejeweled, like the rhinestone-studded collars, and each style will give your dog a unique look.

March 11th, 2010Pets AdviceLeather collars and leashes are sometimes used when doing dog training. Also called lead training, there has been much discussion and debate among dog trainers and pet owners about the benefits and risks of training dogs with the help of dog leashes and collars. One of the questions up for discussion is just how humane the dog training method is that involves yanking the leash in order to correct behavior problems. When done gently, collar and leash correction causes no injury to the animal and helps pet owners dissuade unwanted pet behavior.
If it is done in the correct way and care is taken not to hurt the dog, there is nothing wrong with lead training. As long as there are no sudden forceful pulls on the dog leash that could cause injury, lead training is an ideal method of dog training. Lead training is a very popular form of dog training among experts in the dog training community because when it is done properly, it gets effective results quickly.
It really depends on the dog and his or her personality when it comes to dog training collars and leashes; some dogs are ready and willing to put on their collar and other animals are not so enthusiastic about it. Before teaching your dog the collar and leash method, train him or her to sit and stay first. Most dogs like to wriggle around and be uncooperative when you try to put a collar and leash on them, so the sit and stay commands are a basic building block of the learning experience.
Dog training can be a time consuming and difficult task. When leather collars and leashes do not work, another approach is taken. This is when shock collars are sometimes used. However, shock collars are only meant for dogs that have ingrained behavioral problems and have not responded to normal, non-electronic training methods. Dog training is an art and science, and like any artist or teacher, you must choose your tools and instruction very carefully in order to properly train your pet.
After your pet’s behavior problems have been addressed, you may be wondering what type of collar you will need for everyday wear by your dog. Leather collars are constructed to hold up to the hardships a dog can create. Remember to attach dog id tags with the dog’s name and your contact information to the collar so that if your pet should become lost, the strangers who find the animal can contact you.
