How To Administer Dog Joint Pain Medication To Care For Your Dog

September 8th, 2010Pets AdviceThere are times when you will need to administer medication to care for your dog’s joint pain or other health problems. They may require daily care and treatment, or perhaps your dog may suffer an injury that requires medication. Your pet may have daily pain or suffer a disease, such as diabetes where it will require daily care.
So how do you give your dog its joint pain medicine while caring for its dog arthritis or other dog problems? There are three common methods and they are as follows:
Using The Pouch Method For Liquid Medicine
Liquid medication such as FlexPet, is easy to administer for your dogs arthritis and joint pain. With liquid medicines most of them can be easily administered with a dropper, either directly into their mouth or mixed in with their food. To use the pouch method you will use one hand to pull the corner of the dog’s lip open. This is the lower lip’s corner. When you do this it makes a little pouch. In the mean time hold your dogs head back so that you can pour with the other hand. This may even be a little painful if you are not gentle when holding your dog, especially if it is suffering from dog arthritis.
If this doesn’t seem to work very well then get some help to hold the dog in place. If your dog has its teeth clamped then gently pry its mouth open using a couple of fingers. Your dog might try to escape from your grip so hold him with his rear end in a corner so he cannot back away. Follow the steps to make the pouch and then give the dog joint pain formula or other liquid medication. If you find you have difficulty and require more information, you can ask a vet a question.
Prying Your Dog’s Mouth Open
With this method you need to open the upper jaw. Take your thumb and fingers and place them in the gaps behind the fangs while you hold the upper jaw with one hand. At this point, the dog will relax just enough to open its mouth a bit. Then you can carefully spoon or use a dropper to pour the medicine in between your dogs teeth. Naturally you will have to have your pets head tilted backwards slightly.Giving Your Dog Pills Or Capsules
Take the pill and hold it between your first finger and your thumb, or if easier for you, between the second fingers and the first finger. After you have the capsule or pill in place, use the rest of your fingers to push open the lower jaw at the front teeth.
Now you have to get the pill as far back into the dog’s throat as you can. Then make your dog swallow. After a while you will find it easier to do as in the beginning it may appear difficult, but you and your dog will both gain experience. Your dogs health is important so if it is suffering from dog arthritis or joint pain now you can administer its medication easily.
