Pets, like humans, prefer a soft comfy place to sleep. Older pets especially like soft beds, to rest their aching bones plus joints. The soft pet beds within the pet departments look nice, but they will be rather pricey. Do not despair; you can make a bed for your devoted companion using an older couch or chair cushion or an old baby mattress; plus it does not even need any sewing abilities. 

Confirm how big a bed you’ll need to fit your pet. If Daisy is a small Yorkie, then an old chair cushion can work. But, if Rover is a Husky, then you may want an old baby bed mattress or couch cushion. 1 way to determine  how large a pet bed you’ll require is to see which piece of furniture your pet prefers to sleep on; if they’re allowed on the furniture, that is. Decide  where the pet bed will be placed; this will determine whether or not it has to be trimmed down. Place the old cushion or mattress on the floor for many days. See if it gets in the way when you are walking past it. If you want to trim it down, use a utility blade or big knife to chop off excess. Place the protecting pad over the cushion. If you don’t have a protecting pad, employ a plastic sheet or maybe a shower curtain liner. This will be to guard the cushion or mattress from moisture, odors or any vermin that could be living on your pet. Secure the pad with sheet smoothers, to help it stay in place. 

Put the old sheet, blanket or fitted baby bed sheet on the top of the protective pad. If you used a plastic sheet or shower curtain liner, you should use 2 sheets or blankets on top; this may help prevent your pet from sweating because of lying on plastic. Secure the sheet(s) with sheet smoothers; they may be purchased at bedding stores. Place an old rug on the bottom where the pet bed will be located. This may protect your floor from the metal within the sheet smoothers. Introduce your pet to his new bed. Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t take to it instantly; he could not like walking across something which gives below his feet. Encourage him with praise, petting and even treats until he is accustomed to it. Be patient, as this might take several days or even weeks.
