As you may have already guessed, the Red Eared Slider Turtle has derived its name from its bright scarlet ears which are its distinguishing features and set it apart from its other “slider” cousins. There are many reasons why the red eared slider turtle is the most popular pick among pet turtles.

It is pretty tame and mild-mannered in captivity, has a tolerant nature, can adapt to a variety of conditions, lives for very long periods, has very modest demands, is slow-moving, calm natured, quiet and pretty hardy if you provide it with its appropriate natural habitat.

It is a fresh water turtle species which happens to be a prolific breeder. Its several eye-catching lovely morphs are leucistic, pastel and albino.

The biggest health risk in keeping reptiles is the threat of Salmonella, a bacteria which many reptiles carry and can transmit to humans. Salmonella can cause life threatening symptoms in people, including severe dehydration, through bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. In children and elderly people, this bacterium is not only severe, but can kill. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that over 5% of all Salmonella cases were caused by exposure to some form of reptile.

Because the risk is so great, it is important to take safety precautions when working or playing with reptiles in your own home. For example:

· Wash your hands with warm water and soap, or use a disinfectant after any contact with reptiles

These colorful pets provide a nice addition to a sitting room and provide a great conversation piece. They are called dinosaurs in small packages by some. Geckos eat mostly insects and actually live very well right along with people when those people will let them.

Geckos live in many different warm climates across the globe which will dictate the kind of habitat that will be required to house one in your favorite room.

They really are cool little creatures that add color and life to any room.
